September 2022 -
In a landmark 2022 collaboration, Straker, a New Zealand-based translation company, partnered with Microsoft to leverage their combined AI and translation platforms to improve the availability and scale of te reo Māori translations in New Zealand media. The collaboration combines Straker's existing translation software and AI with Microsoft's Translator platform to create an automated translation system. The AI serves as a tool to increase efficiency, but humans remain central to the process, with translators and editors reviewing and refining the AI-generated drafts. The goal is to enable the translation of large volumes of content, like entire news articles, into te reo Māori, making the language more accessible in everyday life.

For years, IBM relied on web-based tools and a sprawling network of local language service providers to manage translations. This process was fragmented, time-intensive, and required employees to navigate multiple systems, manually upload files, and manage complex approval processes. When IBM adopted the Straker app in Slack, everything changed. By integrating translation directly into Slack, IBM teams no longer needed to rely on external tools or multiple suppliers. Translation became a seamless part of their existing workflows. Today 300,000 users across 170 countries utilize the Straker App, dropping costs by a factor of five and increasing translation speed for an average document from seven days to 0.7 seconds.
